Film Production In Cameroun: From Preproduction To Postproduction. (2011)
This work, titled Filmmaking in Cameroon from Preproduction to Postproduction, explores the relationship between the three phases of production in the film world in Cameroon and how each impacts on the other.
Hinged on the hypothesis that if the practice of filmmaking in Cameroon were to follow the theory of filmmaking. Cameroonian filmmakers will produce better films, it examines the production processes of three productions in Cameroon. This is done through field work and a comparative analysis of varying productions in Cameroon. Psychoanalysis, apparatus theory and the perception of visual reality, make up the theoretical frame for the bases of this work.
This research endeavour seeks an understanding of the conventional production processes and that which happens in Cameroon. How does this affect the finished product and thus the evolution of the film industry as a whole in Cameroon?
After examining filmic techniques, aesthetics and acting as components of the three phases of production in Cameroon, we realized that the contextualization and acculturation of production techniques could fashion a hybridization that could become a radiating force in asserting the continual evolution, revolution and sustainability of the budding cinema industry in Cameroon
Divided into an introduction, a conclusion and four chapters, first chapter provides theoretical considerations in the art of filmmaking, examining some major concepts in the art of filmmaking. The second chapter presents the process of filmmaking proper in Cameroon by presenting three productions that happened within the time of this research
Chapter three takes a look at one of the most important elements in the filmmaking process, acting, how it relates with the filmmaker and how it affects the finished product. It examines how acting blends with technique through the three phases of filmmaking How Cameroonian filmmakers manipulate the apparatus of cinema, that is, the human as well as the machine apparatus with emphasis on managerial principles and qualities, technical expertise and its implementation.
The ethics and aesthetics of Cameroonian productions and the production process as a unique experience to the Cameroonian filmmaker and how this negotiates a space of its own within the production context in Cameroon is explored in shifts in production connotations which makes up chapter four. Here results from field work and the analyses thereof are also presented. The work ends with a conclusion that resumes the thoughts and analysis carried out in this research endeavour and also puts forth proposals for filmmakers in Cameroon.
